The experimental pavilion was delivered for [d]arc magazine’s 2019 awards party in London’s Dalston arts district. Championing cheap and readily available materials, the hand-built construction repurposes foil emergency blankets to form a faceted reflective interior, with dynamic spotlighting to bathe guests in a shimmering golden light. This dramatic experience is encased within an enigmatic black box, drawing from the 2019 event theme ‘presents’ to transport guests on a journey of wonder and discovery.
The Delta Light spotlights are finished in Flemish Gold to complement this metallic environment, contrasting directional highlighting with ambient illumination to envelop guests in a complex radiant texture. These minimalist lamps are together sequenced to offer a slowly undulating lightscape, betrayed only by a gentle spill through the translucent scrim ceiling and hidden doorways, signalling the abstract cube’s presence to the surrounding industrial venue. All fittings are controlled wirelessly via Delta Light’s Bluetooth system.
Within the event’s limited pavilion budget allowance, the project proves the value of experience over materiality, subverting the event’s traditional exhibit format to connect guests joyfully and memorably with light itself.
This conceptual project was published in the January 2020 issue of [d]arc’s sister title Arc Magazine.
